Today, nearly one million of Antoine's descendants live in
Canada and the United States.
Antoine: coureur de bois is an unusual hybrid, wedding documentable facts with imaginative re-creation into a seemless narrative, set in 17th century North America.
Ever since the hatters of Europe went mad for beaver, the coureurs de bois spread terror throughout the hitherto peaceable lodges of Canada's national rodent.
However, there was another European interest, namely geography. In the history of geographical exploration, conquering the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico was considered one of the great prizes for the French.
Who was the first Frenchman to discover, and map, the mouth of the Mississippi?
Was it La Salle?
In the annals of exploration this question has been debated by the Jesuit Jean Delanglez. In examining several explorers' journals, letters and maps, Delanglez found evidence that La Salle's agent erased and doctored entries and maps.
About the Novel
The work is based on 17th-century documents which provide the evidence that North America was explored and mapped, not by a few great men but by many ordinary citizens.
The author has chosen the narrative form because it is the most persuasive style to symbolize the ancestral history of millions of North Americans of French descent.
